Rent (often stylized as RENT) is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Larson's inspiration for Rent's content came from several different sources. Many of the characters and plot elements are drawn directly from Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème, the world premiere of which was in 1896, a century before Rent's premiere. The musical was first seen in a limited three-week workshop production at New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. This same off-Broadway theatre was also the musical's initial home following its official January 25, 1996 opening. The show's creator, Jonathan Larson, died suddenly the night before the off-Broadway premiere. The show won a Pulitzer Prize, and the production was a hit. On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical among other awards. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008 after a 12-year run of 5,124 performances, the ninth longest-running Broadway show at the time. The success of the show led to several national tours and numerous foreign productions. In 2005 it was adapted into a motion picture that features most of the original cast members. “We really enjoyed RENT when we saw it. The set and lighting were amazing! The actors were fresh and enthusiastic. Music was terrific (kudos to the band and singers). Good story with an important message. Great supporting cast of background characters. We loved the hospital scene where Tom Collins cradles Angel as he is dying. Love is love, no matter who the participants are.”

“I have seen this play twice and bought the DVD. I could watch this weekly! The story was touching and portrayed an important and usually ignored reality that exists among us. The music was full of emotion that brought the story together. Even my teens loved it. I've seen many top-rated Broadway musicals but this one was by far the best! I would urge others to check this out, you wouldn't be disappointed! Every moment left a lasting impression-I would see it again in a heartbeat!”
